Part 1: A snippet from the archives
A list of “rules” to begin the week.
Often misattributed to John Cage, the below was actually written by Sister Mary Corita Kent in the 1960s as a list of guiding principles for her students:
As much as Kent’s approach has become widely circulated—or maybe just as Kent, like so many women, often becomes a placeholder for aesthetic projection (a la Georgia O’Keeffe or Joan Didion)—I can’t help but respect and connect with where she was coming from:
No distinction between the high and the low. Nothing too serious. Everything is source material.
My favorite line item in said list comes from the “helpful hints” footnote:
Always Be Around.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve metabolized as an adult is the value in showing up. I believe this across everything. Consistency, rigor, reliability, effort. Truly, it’s about the slow burn.
