Onto the Attention Inventory du jour: last month I was a master of distracting myself from the spectacular mediocrity of the U.S., avoiding the apocalyptic tedium of politics with a laundry list of hobbies:

Fiction-writing classes, absurdly long walks, restarting my ceramics workshops (in between a couple emergency dental procedures), and going back to Japan for the second time this year.

Perhaps it’s all an example of my own insane, insatiable need to sink deeper into the places that surprise me, into outlets that evade simplification, into practices where I must attune to nuance.
